Union Assurance Suwamaga Impact Report 2025 Reveals Eye-Opening Insights About Silent-Killer

Union Assurance, Sri Lanka’s premier Life Insurer, proudly unveiled its ‘Union Assurance Suwamaga Impact Report’ at an event held at Hilton Residences, highlighting the significant impact of its flagship CSR programme Union Assurance Suwamaga. Launched in 2024, Union Assurance Suwamaga is a nationwide initiative aimed at addressing the alarming rise in diabetes prevalence across Sri Lanka. The programme is anchored on four strategic pillars: raising awareness about diabetes and its risks, promoting healthy lifestyles through education and engagement, supporting early detection and risk management, and fostering community participation.

At the heart of the initiative is the Union Assurance Suwamaga Mobile Screening Unit, a fully equipped medical truck introduced in collaboration with the Diabetes Association of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Health. Staffed by certified healthcare professionals, the unit provides free diabetes screenings to the public, along with detailed health reports and personalised lifestyle modification advice to help reduce risk factors. In addition to the Mobile Screening Unit, Union Assurance partnered with its strategic partners and private healthcare providers to conduct screenings at selected locations nationwide, supplying essential equipment and resources to strengthen these outreach efforts.

The Union Assurance Suwamaga Impact Report reviews the programme’s achievements over a 15-month period from June 2024 to August 2025. During this time, the Company delivered free diabetes-related screenings to more than 23,000 lives, achieving island-wide coverage across all 25 districts and conducting screenings at 263 locations. The report provides valuable insights into diabetes related health concerns among the most affected segment of the population based on BMI, Random Blood Sugar/Fasting Blood Sugar, HbA1c testing, current health status and  family health history derived from the total beneficiary sample.

Report Presentation to Ministry of Health

Commenting on the occasion, Chief Executive Officer of Union Assurance Senath Jayatilake stated, “At Union Assurance, every initiative we undertake reflects our commitment to empowering progress by protecting what matters, and a critical part of this focus is protecting the health of our people. In line with this brand vision, we are honoured to present the Union Assurance Suwamaga Impact Report, which demonstrates the reach and impact of our flagship CSR programme. While our initial goal was to reach 15,000 lives through direct screenings, we have successfully impacted over 23,000 individuals achieving 155% of our impact goal. This milestone is a testament to not only the scale of our outreach but also the depth of our impact, particularly at the grassroots level where access to healthcare is often limited.”

He further added, “We invite all stakeholders, especially policymakers and corporates, to reflect on these findings and take decisive steps toward collective action. This includes strengthening prevention strategies and driving greater awareness-building initiatives to combat diabetes at a national level. Together, we can create a healthier future for all Sri Lankans.”

Chief Marketing Officer of Union Assurance Mahen Gunarathna stated, “Our data through the Union Assurance Suwamaga Impact Report tells a powerful story. Among the 13% of beneficiaries referred for further HbA1c testing, 76% were found to be in the diabetes stage. This alarming figure highlights the widespread nature of the disease and the urgent need for early intervention. Moreover, nearly 3% of beneficiaries were diagnosed with diabetes for the first time through Union Assurance Suwamaga, lives that may have otherwise gone undetected and untreated.”

“Beyond diagnosis, the programme has sparked meaningful behavioural change, with 71% of beneficiaries reporting positive behavioural changes that led to improved health outcomes. This is a significant achievement, showing that Union Assurance Suwamaga is not just identifying issues, it’s inspiring people to take action and transform their lives. As we look to the future, our commitment remains stronger than ever. We are excited to expand the reach of Union Assurance Suwamaga, deepen its impact, and continue advancing our vision of empowering the progress of all Sri Lankans,” he added.
