Driving Inclusive Growth at the Grassroots: Lanka Lions Foundation’s Micro Loan Initiative Continues to Uplift Entrepreneurs Across Sri Lanka

The Lanka Lions Foundation (LLF), the charitable arm dedicated to humanitarian and community upliftment under Lions in Sri Lanka, continues to make a significant impact on grassroots entrepreneurship through its long-standing micro loan programme aimed at supporting economically active low-income individuals who are unable to access traditional banking facilities.

As of April 30th, 2026, the Foundation has successfully awarded 3,079 micro loans totaling Rs. 112,784,045 to 2,668 loan recipients who had been recommended by 210 Lions Clubs across all 12 districts of Multiple District 306. Throughout Sri Lanka, the initiative has become a powerful tool for self-employment, financial independence, and family upliftment.

Significantly, over 75% of the beneficiaries have been female entrepreneurs looking for opportunities to start small businesses, raise household incomes, and give their families a more secure future. The programme continues to empower individuals at the grassroots level by giving them access to financial support that would otherwise be unattainable, from small-scale retail and agriculture-related enterprises to home-based food production and tailoring ventures.

The purpose of the Lanka Lions Foundation’s micro loan initiative is to support long-term community development, dignity, and self-reliance while generating sustainable economic opportunities. In contrast to traditional lending structures, the programme emphasizes social impact, community recommendation, and trust, guaranteeing that deserving recipients receive practical financial aid under the direction and support of local Lions Clubs.

Commenting on the Foundation’s journey and impact, Founder of the Lanka Lions Foundation, Mahendra Amarasuriya stated: “The Lanka Lions Foundation was founded on the belief that empowering individuals to provide for themselves and their families with dignity is the first step toward long-term social upliftment. Our micro loan programme has shown that, when given to hardworking individuals with an entrepreneurial drive, even small amounts of financial support can bring about revolutionary change. The outcomes we have attained thus far are a testament to both the Foundation’s and Sri Lanka’s Lions Clubs’ unwavering commitment to identifying and supporting worthy beneficiaries in their respective communities.”

In addition to providing financial support, the Foundation’s work reflects Lions’ larger humanitarian mission in Sri Lanka, which aims to create significant and measurable social impact through community-driven service initiatives. The micro loan programme’s success serves as a testament of how collective service leadership can contribute to grassroots development and economic resilience across the country.

Through its ongoing efforts, the Lanka Lions Foundation hopes to strengthen opportunities and broaden its reach for underserved communities, especially women-led households and aspiring small-scale entrepreneurs who need a pathway to self-sufficiency and economic stability.
