Alumex PLC, Sri Lanka’s number one aluminium extrusion manufacturer, has joined forces with Port City Colombo to expand its flagship sustainability programme, ELEVATE, with its pledge to hand over Used Beverage Cans (UBC) collection bins to promote responsible waste management and safeguard the country’s coastal environment.
Alumex will place the bins across Port City Colombo’s public spaces, including the Marina Promenade and beach, encouraging visitors to responsibly dispose of UBC waste.
The valuable partnership was formally announced on 7th November by the Managing Director of Alumex PLC, Pramuk Dediwela; and the General Manager – Investment Promotion & Marketing of CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd., Tian Zheng.
As Sri Lanka’s first foreign-currency designated Special Economic Zone and master-planned city development, Port City Colombo reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility by partnering in this initiative to strengthen UBC waste circularity.
Commenting on the occasion, Pramuk Dediwela, Managing Director of Alumex PLC said, “Our partnership with Port City Colombo represents a meaningful step forward in Alumex’s mission to create a cleaner, more sustainable Sri Lanka. The installation of UBC collection bins across this landmark development is a call to action to embrace responsible waste management and circular economy principles. Through such initiatives, our ELEVATE ESG roadmap is inspiring us to advance real change by decarbonising our operations, conserving biodiversity and driving innovation across the aluminium value chain.”
Sharing his thoughts on the partnership, Xiong Hongfeng, Managing Director of CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd., added, “At Port City Colombo, sustainability is not an afterthought – it is built into the very foundation of our vision for a future-ready city. Partnering with Alumex allows us to turn that vision into action, through simple, visible reminders that inspire every individual to play a role in protecting our environment and safeguarding Sri Lanka’s coastline. This initiative is a tangible example of how collective responsibility can drive lasting change and help build the cleaner, greener future we all aspire to.”

Reaffirming its commitment to the environment through this partnership, the Alumex Melting facility will serve as a recycling hub for all collected UBC material, contributing both to environmental sustainability and to the growth of Sri Lanka’s circular economy.
This project is part of Alumex PLC’s ELEVATE ESG roadmap, a comprehensive framework guiding its long-term commitment to sustainability and stakeholder value creation. It strengthens Alumex’s position as a global benchmark in sustainable aluminium manufacturing while aiming to boost customer satisfaction to 85% and keep stakeholders at the core of its strategy and operations.
In keeping with the global shift toward a circular economy, Alumex has strengthened its commitment to sustainability by aligning its operations with international environmental standards and working to lower Sri Lanka’s overall carbon footprint. The company has set an ambitious target to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity by 25%, underscoring its role in the worldwide effort to mitigate climate change while improving energy efficiency across its operations.
To reinforce this commitment, Alumex is an active member of leading international sustainability frameworks, including the International Aluminium Institute and the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). These affiliations guide the company’s efforts to decarbonise the aluminium value chain through cleaner energy adoption, streamlined production processes and robust recycling initiatives that advance resource circularity.
The company’s sustainability roadmap also emphasises responsible sourcing, with a goal to subject 50% of its suppliers to social and environmental screening to ensure ethical and sustainable practices across the supply chain. Alumex has pledged a 30% reduction in water consumption intensity and continues to prioritise biodiversity protection and habitat restoration, reflecting a holistic approach to environmental management.
At its core, Alumex operates with transparency, integrity and accountability, fostering an inclusive and empowering workplace that values diversity and nurtures employee growth through continuous learning opportunities. Its social outreach extends well beyond the factory floor: providing scholarships, educational support, healthcare benefits and livelihood opportunities for employees, their families and local communities. Alumex PLC continues to redefine Sri Lanka’s aluminium industry through responsible innovation and sustainability-led manufacturing.
